Pendragon VI

69 foot of pure adrenalin in carbon fibre

This biggey took up 69 ft (21m) on the workshop floor. The Grand Prix Racer Pendragon VI was built for a Californian yachtsman and she is the second serious race boat that Franklins have built for him, the first being the 52 foot PHRF Davidson designed Pendragon IV built in early 2000.

Pendragon VI is built entirely in carbon fibre pre-preg and cured in the new 28 metre oven that Franklins built to handle the job.
The interior ends are finished in high gloss over the carbon fibre while the centre area is a paint finish with American maple trim and red upholstery.
She sports a Southern Spars rig with North Sails, a lifting keel, and a 75hp Volvo Penta auxiliary with a retractable drive.

The photos in the slider show the construction process through to launching and sea trials on Auckland harbour in New Zealand.

Photos show the hull suspended in the lifting gear, while the internal structure is assembled below it.

The hull was then lowered onto the internal structure and glued together.

The deck mould photos show the deck layup under way with the Nomex core fitted.

With the hull still upside down, the floors, bulkheads, keel case and engine bed are all in place, while work continues on the deck.

Once the deck was ready, the hull was lifted and then lowered onto the deck. The hull was then painted and then turned right way up.

In early March  2009, rapid progress was made, with interior finishing taking place, along with deck fairing and finishing ready for painting. Cockpit gear is also being fitted prior to final finishing and painting.

By May 2009, the hull is painted and Pendragon VI is resplendent in her lustrous red and gold livery.

Pendragon VI sits in Franklin's construction shed for the last few hours before taking a road trip to the Christchurch port of Lyttelton for fitting of her 5 metre long, 9 ton lifting keel and then shipping to Auckland for the fitting of her 30 metre mast and her sail wardrobe.

June 2009 - Sea Trials in Auckland

Pendragon VI was shipped to Auckland for the fitting of her 30 metre mast, running rigging and her sail wardrobe in early June.

The photos at the end of the slider show her first days under sail in Auckland harbour as sea trials took place.
